Picasso at the Guggenheim Venice

Grand opening, on August 26th, birthday of Peggy Guggenheim, at Palazzo Venier dei leoni for the exhibition Picasso sulla spiaggia (on the beach), with Luca Massimo Barbero as curator.

Through a unique selection between draws, paintings and one sculpture, the curator wants to stand out the job of the spanish artist, marking the connection with the Mediterranean sea that had an important role in the artistic career of Picasso. The exhibition, born with the collaboration with the Picasso musuem in Paris, twists and turns around one of the beloved paintings of Peggy Guggenheim: the painting on the beach.

Picasso at the Guggenheim Venice, painting “on the beach”.

On the beach, where the enormous antropomorfic figures are in a marine enviroment, recalls the works between the end of the ’20 and the ’30. It will be put beside  by Femme assise sur la plage, a masterpiece of the Musée des beaux Artes de Lyon, dated 10th February 1937. This painting shows a naked woman, on a beach, surprised during a common gesture.

Besides few paitings, during your visit you can admire a third important work of Picasso “La grande baigneuse au livre”. The works becomes a big white-grey coloured sculpture, with crossed-legged, with the eyes down to a book and supported by the elbows. In this work, Picasso wants to abandon the shape of the previous bather, in favour of a static construction, almost cubist. The exhibition will be open until January 7th 2018 and everyday the museum offers, at 3 pm, free presentation of the exhibition with the purchase of the ticket.

Historical Regatta Venice

The Historical Regatta is the main event in the annual “Voga alla Veneta” rowing calendar, unique sport that has been practised in the Venetian lagoon for thousands of years.

The historical regatta is one of the main events in the world and takes place the first Sunday of September.

Today, it is even more spectacular thanks to the water pageant that preceds the race: a parade of tipical 16th-century styles boats, colorful and gondoliers in costume that carry the Duke, the Doge’s wife and the most important Venetian officials up in the Grand Canal. A true reconstruction of the glorius past of the most famous and powerful Maritime republic of the Mediterranean.

The famous parade that preceds the regattas.

The four races are divided nowadays in terms of age and type of craft: the most famous is the regatta “Campioni su gondolini” , where small sporting gondolas fly down the Grand Canal to the finish line in front of the famous “machina” the spectacular floating stage located in front of Ca’ Foscari palace. You can attend the Regata Storica comfortably seated on the uncovered floating stalls set up along the Grand Canal near Campo San Polo (acces from San Silvestro/Calle dei Sbianchesini – San Silvestro Actv stop). The floating platform is set in one of the most beautiful and spectacular points along the route, and allows to attend the historical water pageant and all the regattas with views of Rialto.

Redentore Feast Venice

Between 1575 and 1577 Venice was hit by the most terrible plague after the one happened in 1348. Around 50000 people died. They were about one third of the venetian citizens. In order to beat the plague, the city decided, only in a second time, to move all the infected. All the suspects were moved to Lazzaretto Nuovo in the first place and then to Lazzaretto Vecchio if they were found infected.  As they were thousands, the senate decided to hoard the infected inside some boats docked near the two islands.

This paiting shows the plague that hit Venice in 1575.

On 4th September 1576, the Senate of the Serenissima republic decreed to built a church in the name of Christ the redeemer as thanks for freeing the city from the plague. The first stone was laid in 1577.

The project was commissioned to Palladio.

The Redentore Church, built by Palladio at the end of the 16th century.

On July 20th of 1577, in order to celebrate the end of the plague, was built a bridge made of boats to reach the spot where the Church was being built. The third Sunday of July we still celebrate Redentore Feast. In the night between Saturday and Sunday takes place a show of fireworks in Saint Mark’s Basin and on Sunday take place instead three regattas with traditional boats.

Redentore Feast fireworks.

Do not lose this opportunity! Live the fireworks from Hotel Bucintoro, directly from your room!
