The Saint Mark’s Tower Venice

The Saint Mark’s Tower is the symbol of our town and one of the most known monument in the world.
El paròn de casa,
how is called by the venetians, has a square form and it is 99 meters tall if we include the pinnacle that was used by the sailors like a lighthouse.

The famous bell tower built in the XII century.

This was the main function that the Saint Mark’s Bell Tower of Venice had within the XII century. The actual look comes by the reconstruction made in the 16th century, when the tower was capped by a pyramidal spire, at the top of which sits a golden weathervane in the form of the archangel Gabriel.

The angel on top of the pyramidal spire of the Saint Mark’s bell tower indicates the direction of the wind. Actually he is an archangel: Archangel Gabriel,  who appears to the Holy Mary the day of the Annunciation.

The Saint Mark’s Bell tower  is 98.6 metres (323 ft) tall, and stands alone in a corner of St Mark’s Square, near the front of the basilica. It has a simple form, the bulk of which is a fluted brick square shaft, 12 metres (39 ft) wide on each side and 50 metres (160 ft) tall, above which is a loggia surrounding the belfry, housing five bells. The belfry is topped by a cube, alternate faces of which show the Lion of St. Mark and the female representation of Venice.

A picture of the bell tower in 1902 that shows its fall.

On July 14th 1902, the Saint Mark’s bell tower of Venice suddendly falls. The city council approved the reconstruction of the tower as it was before the fall. Works began on 25th April 1903 and they finished 9 years later, in 1912.

Redentore Feast Venice

Between 1575 and 1577 Venice was hit by the most terrible plague after the one happened in 1348. Around 50000 people died. They were about one third of the venetian citizens. In order to beat the plague, the city decided, only in a second time, to move all the infected. All the suspects were moved to Lazzaretto Nuovo in the first place and then to Lazzaretto Vecchio if they were found infected.  As they were thousands, the senate decided to hoard the infected inside some boats docked near the two islands.

This paiting shows the plague that hit Venice in 1575.

On 4th September 1576, the Senate of the Serenissima republic decreed to built a church in the name of Christ the redeemer as thanks for freeing the city from the plague. The first stone was laid in 1577.

The project was commissioned to Palladio.

The Redentore Church, built by Palladio at the end of the 16th century.

On July 20th of 1577, in order to celebrate the end of the plague, was built a bridge made of boats to reach the spot where the Church was being built. The third Sunday of July we still celebrate Redentore Feast. In the night between Saturday and Sunday takes place a show of fireworks in Saint Mark’s Basin and on Sunday take place instead three regattas with traditional boats.

Redentore Feast fireworks.

Do not lose this opportunity! Live the fireworks from Hotel Bucintoro, directly from your room!
