Anselm Kiefer (Donaueschingen, Germany, 1945) accepted the invitation of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (MUVE) to present an installation of site-specific paintings capable of communicating with two of the most important spaces of the Doge's Palace and with history of Venice itself, composing a work that reflects on the unique position of Venice between North and South and on its interaction between East and West and finds equally significant connections between these different cultures, the history of the city and the text of the work Goethe's Tragedy, Faust: Second Part (1832). Philosophical and literary references are a constant in Anselm Kiefer's work, the very title of the exhibition Anselm Kiefer. These Writings, When Burned, Will Finally Give Some Light (Andrea Emo) originates from the words of the Venetian philosopher Andrea Emo (1901 - 1983), whose writings Kiefer met for the first time six years ago discovering profound consonances with your own artistic method. Palazzo Ducale, for its part, has welcomed generations of artists including Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto and many others, while the monumental space and the walls of the Sala dello Scrutinio, the seat designated for the election of the Doge, they are richly decorated with paintings that celebrate the power of the Serenissima Republic of Venice.
